Bronze Medals for Atom 'A' Hornets!

The first weekend of March, the Goulbourn Hornets Atom A boys basketball team took part in the Gloucester Wolverines Junior Boys Invitational Tournament in Orleans.

The Hornets first game in preliminary action was against a strong Gloucester Wolverines #2 team. In previous match-ups this season, the Hornets had lost by as much as 50 points. The Hornets weren’t intimated and played a much improved game with a final score of 44-26 for the Wolverines.

Next the Hornets took on the Nepean Bobcats #2 squad. The Hornets were slow out of the gate and trailed by 3 at the half. The Hornets regrouped at half and played a stronger second half to win the game 35-27.

The final game of round robin action pitted the Hornets against the Kingston Fighting Irish A team. The Hornets were outsized, but didn’t give up. The Hornets looked sluggish in the first half and were down 28- 2 at the half. They played a better second half, but it wasn’t enough to erase the earlier deficit and Kingston took the contest.

The Hornets 1 and 2 record in preliminary play was enough for third place in the pool and meant a Sunday morning semi-final rematch against the Irish, who finished second in the pool. Again, the Hornets got off to a slow start, but gained intensity as the game progressed. In the end though, the size and physicality of the Irish lead them to victory once more and sent the Hornets to the Bronze medal game.

The Bronze medal match-up had the Hornets again facing the Nepean Bobcats #2 squad. The Hornets got off to a great start, to lead 10-2 early in the contest. The Bobcats replied and tied the score early in the second half. The Stingers gained momentum in the second half and rolled to a 43-31 victory. For their efforts, the Stingers were awarded the Atom A bronze medals. The Hornets are coached by John Johnston, Sean McDade and Scott Hamilton.

Hornets Earn Silver Medals!

The last weekend of February, the Goulbourn Hornets Atom A basketball team traveled to Cornwall to take part in the Eastern Ontario Basketball Association Division 3 Championships.

The first game in the tournament saw the Hornets take on local rival, the Nepean Bobcats #2. The Hornets came out hard and played some tenacious defense to win their first game of the tournament. In the second game of the day, the Hornets met the Osgoode-Rideau Bedrock squad. At half the Hornets were down by only two points 19-17, but faded in the second half to lose the contest 43-31. The final game of the tournament for the Hornets was versus the Kemptville Warriors. The Warriors badly outsized the Hornets at every position, but the Hornets worked hard on defense to box out and stopped the Warriors from dominating the offensive boards. The Hornets were up two points at the half 22-20, and rallied for a 47-37 victory.
