at the Ontario Cup Provincial Tournament!

|
The Goulbourn Hornets Major Atom
basketball team wrapped up a successful season by
bringing home Division 3 4th place medals from the 2008
Ontario Cup Provincial Basketball Tournament played in
London on April 4th-6th.
The Hornet’s first game in round robin play was Friday
evening versus the Welland Warriors. The Hornets didn’t
exhibit any signs of the long day of travel when they
took to the court and won their first game 42-34.
Saturday morning the Hornets met IEM from Newmarket in
their second game of round robin action. The Hornets got
off to a slow start and were tied with the IEM squad
midway through the contest. In the second half, the
Hornets persevered to take the game 44-38.
The last game of round robin play was against the
Mississauga Monarchs #2 squad. The Hornets came to play
and downed the Monarchs 37-28. The Hornets perfect 3-0
record in pool C play advanced them to the quarter
finals versus the Barrie Royals on Saturday evening.
This was a crucial game as the winner advanced to the
medal round on Sunday and the loser was through for the
tournament. With their season on the line, the Hornets
jumped to a 21-13 halftime lead and defeated the Royals
51-29 to advance to Sunday’s medal round.

In Sunday morning semi-final play the Hornets faced the
Kitchener-Waterloo Eagles for the right to advance to
the championship game. The Hornets worked hard at both
ends of the floor and were tied with the Eagles with
several minutes left on the clock. However, the Hornets
went cold during the final minutes and the Eagles took
the game 46-39. This loss sent the Hornets to the bronze
medal side of the championship bracket.
The bronze
medal game was a tough match-up versus the Lithuanian
Athletic Association. In early March, LAC had beaten the
Hornets by 30 points in their one previous meeting of
the season. The Hornets refused to be intimidated and
jumped to an 18-15 lead at the break. In the second half
both teams continued to press with bronze medals on the
line. LAC tied the score with a long three pointer with
ten seconds left on the clock. The Hornet’s last second
shot rattled out and the game continued with an overtime
period. The LAC shooters got hot from the floor in the
overtime period and LAC went on to win the game 37-23.
The Hornets earned 4th place Division 3 medals to a
standing ovation from their very proud fans.
Congratulations to the Major Atom Hornets on a
wonderful tournament and a great season. The team
finished the 2007-2008 campaign with medals in 6 of 7
tournaments in which they participated. The Hornets
would like to thank to head coach John Johnson,
assistant coach Kim Currie, assistant coach Don Flanders
and manager Maria Rousso for their hard work and
dedication to the team throughout the season.
The Hornets would also like to thank their sponsors for
their generous support this season. Many thanks to:

Hornets Win Silver Medals in
Cornwall!
The Goulbourn Hornets Major Atom
basketball team won silver medals at the Cornwall
Invitational Basketball Tournament held the weekend of
March 28-30th, 2008.
Saturday
morning the Hornets were slated to play the Gloucester
Selects in the opening game of their tournament
schedule. After a long layoff over March break and the
Easter holidays, a sluggish Hornets team found it hard
to get going but did defeat the Select team 50-19 to
start the day with a win.
On Saturday
afternoon the Hornets met the Kingston Impact. The
Hornets started to shake off the rust and played a much
improved game at both ends of the court to take the game
43-38. The Hornets 2-0 record in Pool B action was
enough to advance directly to semi-final play on Sunday
morning.

Major Atom Hornets Win
Bronze in Hamilton!
The Goulbourn Hornets Major Atom
basketball team won bronze medals in Division III of the
Blessed Sacrament Boys Invitational Tournament in
Hamilton on the weekend of February 29th – March 2nd.
The Hornets first game of the tournament was a Friday
evening 8:15 pm start versus the Guelph Phoenix #2.
After a long trip in less than ideal road conditions,
the Hornets relished the opportunity to get out and
stretch their legs. The game was marked by furious end
to end rushes by both teams. At the final buzzer, the
Hornets prevailed 45-37 to earn their first victory of
the tournament.
The Hornets second game of pool B action was at 10:00 am
on the Saturday morning versus the North Toronto
Huskies. The long day on Friday seemed to have taken a
toll on the Hornets who were slow to start and never
regained their intensity of Friday evening. A
disappointed Hornets squad dropped the game 36-30 to the
Huskies.
A victory in the final game of round robin play versus
the Sarnia Shamrocks would advance the Hornets to the
semi-finals. With medal hopes on the line, a revitalized
Hornets squad regained their intensity of Friday evening
and defeated Sarnia 49-40 to move on to the semi-finals
on Sunday morning.
The Hornets played the undefeated Lithuanian Athletic
Club in their Sunday morning semi-final draw. The
Hornets got off to a great start and shot very well from
the floor during the first half. Unfortunately, they
were slow out of the gate during the second half and
faded to lose 67-37.
The North Toronto Huskies also lost their semi-final
game, to set up a rematch against the Hornets for the
bronze medal. The Hornets were determined to avenge
their previous loss to the Huskies and displayed great
defensive intensity throughout the contest. The
pressure-laden Hornets press caused numerous Huskies
turnovers. The Hornets showed great poise and ball
handling skills while stalling out the last two minutes
of the game to take the contest 33-29 and earn the
bronze medals.

In
their final game of the day, the Hornets took on the
Gloucester Wolverines. With both teams sporting
identical 2-0 records on the day, this game would decide
the championship. The Hornets had their work cut out for
them as the last meeting between the two teams saw the
Hornets on the short end of a 58-27 score. The Hornets
refused to be intimidated and were down by only 6 points
at the break. They continued to work hard, but faded in
the final frame as the Wolverines marched to a 58-42
victory.
The Hornets 2-1 record on the day was enough to earn

Second Place!
The Goulbourn
Hornets Major Atom basketball team took second place at
the 4th Annual Shooting Stars Basketball Tournament held
at Ashbury College on the weekend of February 1st-3rd,
2008.
The Hornets experienced a frustrating start to the
tournament on the Friday evening. They were informed
that Friday evening games had all been cancelled due to
weather once the team had already arrived at Ashbury
College. The Hornet’s first game was rescheduled to 8:00
am on the Saturday morning. The Hornets returned to
Ashbury early the next morning and defeated the host
Shooting Stars squad 52-28 to chalk up their first win
of the tournament.
Early Saturday evening, the Hornets took on the local
Nepean Bobcats. The Hornets got off to a quick start to
lead 30-12 at the half. The Hornets continued their
strong play at both ends of the court to take the
contest 51-32 and remain undefeated in Pool A. The
Hornets last game of round robin play was scheduled to
begin at 8:00 pm – a full twelve hours after their
initial game on Saturday morning. The Hornets tipped off
versus the Kingston Impact for the last game of the day.
Despite the long day, the Hornets played an up-tempo
game to lead the Impact 28-10 at the break and went on
to defeat the Impact 52-26. The Hornets perfect 3-0
record in round robin play earned them a berth in
semi-final action versus the Hull Dragons on Sunday
afternoon.

Bronze!
The first
weekend of December, the Goulbourn Hornets Atom
basketball team took part in the Chris Paulin Memorial
Basketball Tournament in Kanata.

Hornets first game in preliminary action was against the
host Kanata Cavaliers. The Hornets worked hard at both
ends of the court to take the game 57-24. Daniel Currie
was awarded player of the game honours for the Hornets.
The
Hornets second game in pool play was versus the Cornwall
Lions squad. The Hornets were slow out of the gate to

The
final game of round robin action pitted the Hornets
against the Ottawa Shooting Stars. The Hornets led from
start to finish and posted a 50-24 victory. Lucas
Mahoney was named the player of the game for the
Hornets.
The Hornets 3 and 0 record in preliminary play was
enough for first place in pool A and meant a Sunday
morning semi-final against the Gloucester Wolverines.
The Hornets had their work cut out for them as the
Wolverines squad is one of the strongest in Eastern
Ontario. The Hornets came to play and matched the
physicality and determination of the Wolverines. The
Hornets played great help defense and forced numerous
Wolverine turnovers. The game was tight from opening
tip-off to final buzzer with the teams tied at 21 at the
half-time break. Eventually, the Wolverines held a 6
point edge and took the contest 47-41. This loss pushed
the Hornets to the Bronze medal game on the Sunday
afternoon.
The Bronze medal match-up had the Hornets again facing
the Kanata Cavaliers squad. The Hornets got off to a
sluggish start, to lead 14-12 at the half. The game
continued to be hotly contested and was tied when the
horn sounded the end of regulation play. The Stingers
managed to outscore the Cavaliers by three points in the
overtime frame and emerged victorious 40-37 to earn the
tournament bronze medals. Brendan Stoqua was selected as
the Hornets’ player of the game.
The Hornets are coached by John Johnston, Kim Currie and
Don Flanders and are managed by Maria Rousso.
