Major Atom Stingers Win Gold At EOBA Championships!
          

2007 / 2008

   
     The number one ranked Goulbourn Stingers Major Atom AA Girls basketball team completed a highly successful season by winning Division 1 gold medals at the 2008 Eastern Ontario Basketball Championships, which were played in Manotick April 5th-6th.

     In Pool play on Saturday, the Stinger’s first game was against the Brockville Blazers. The Stingers came out strong, were up 21-7 at the half and went on to win 45-7. In their second game, the Stingers met the Cornwall Lions, led 20-4 at the half and finished with a 44-16 win. In the final game of the day, the Stingers took on the Kanata Cavaliers. They led 29-10 at the half and finished with a 50-19 win. The Stingers 3-0 record put them in the Division 1 Pool.

     In the Sunday morning Semi-Final game, the Stingers faced the Barrhaven Blue Devils. Both teams played cautiously to begin the game, and Barrhaven led by 1 point after 2 shifts. Then the Stingers turned it on, outscoring the Blue Devils 16-2 in the next 2 shifts to lead 25-12 at the half. In the second half, the Stingers continued their strong play to win 46-20 and advance to the championship game.

     The championship game was against the number two ranked Gloucester Wolverines. In another tight game, the Stingers held a 22-18 half time lead and increased the lead to 38-26 after 7 shifts. The Wolverines mounted another furious attack in the final shift, but came up short and the Stingers won the game 41-39. The Stingers were awarded Gold Medals and became the 2008 EOBA Champions, ending their season with a record of 35 wins, 15 losses and 1 tie.

     The Stingers are coached by Dave Byck, Tony Wilson and Kevin Kennedy and are managed by Larry Vance.


 
Major Atom Stingers Win Bronze At Provincials!

     The Goulbourn Stingers Major Atom AA Girls basketball team brought home Bronze Medals from the 2008 Division 3 Ontario Cup Provincial Basketball Championships, which were played in Windsor March 28th-30th. The Stingers were ranked 2nd going into the championships.

     The Stingers first game in round robin play was on Friday evening against the London Ramblers. After falling behind 11-6 after 2 shifts, the Stingers found their game, led 16-12 at the half, and cruised to a 35-18 victory.

     In their second game on Saturday morning, the Stingers met the Etobicoke Storm. The Stingers came out strong, led 25-9 at the half and finished with a resounding 45-19 win.

     On Saturday afternoon, the Stingers opponent, YAAACE/ICAN, failed to show, which resulted in the Stingers being awarded a 20-0 win. The Stingers 3-0 record in Pool B earned them a spot in the Playoffs.

     On Saturday evening, the Stingers faced St. Catharines CYO. Both teams played cautiously to begin the game. The Stingers led by 3 points after 3 shifts, and then scored 10 unanswered points to take a 24-11 lead at the half. The Stingers went on to 35-25 victory and advanced to the medal round on Sunday..

     On Sunday morning, the Stingers were up against the number four ranked Gloucester Wolverines. In a very tight game, the Stingers held a 21-19 half time lead and increased the lead to 30-25 after 6 shifts. The Wolverines mounted a furious attack in the final 2 shifts and came back to win 43-33, sending the Stingers to the Bronze Medal game.

     In the Bronze medal game, the Stingers opponent was the number one ranked Grimsby Grizzlies, a team they had defeated 39-32 earlier in the season. The Stingers led from start to finish, and showed great poise in a 52-49 victory to earn their Bronze Medals.\

     The Stingers are coached by Dave Byck, Tony Wilson and Kevin Kennedy and are managed by Larry Vance.

Kanata Youth Basketball Association (KYBA)'s annual Chris Paulin Memorial Tournament;
Major Atom A/AA pool, held November 30-December 2nd 2007

          The GBA Stingers won all their pool games defeating Bedrock (46-31), the Ottawa Shooting Stars (46-9) and Belleville Spirit (42-9). They won their semi final game against the Kanata Cavaliers (29-20) and earned silver against Bedrock (35), Goulbourn (29).

Goulbourn Stingers AA Atom Girls Undefeated in
Barrhaven Girls Basketball Association's (BGBA) Tournament
Nov 24/25, 2007

     The Goulbourn Stingers won all of their five games in the Barrhaven Girls Basketball Association tournament defeating the Kanata Cavaliers (30-24), the Gloucester Wolverines (29-24), the Hull Dragons (35-34), the Russell Rockets (18-15) and the Hull Dragons in the championship game (31-19). Congratulations Stingers!
