Major Midget Hornets Take Gold at the
Ottawa Shooting Stars Tournament!
The 4th Annual Ottawa Shooting Stars Tournament didn't
have a very good start. Ontario was blasted by a huge
winter storm; as a result, Basketball Ontario cancelled
all games on Friday evening, causing a huge shuffle by
the Organizers. Saturday, however dawned bright and
sunny, with the Hornets playing their first game against
the host team, the Ottawa Shooting Stars. The team
played well and defeated the Shooting Stars 56-42.
The second game on Saturday saw a convincing victory
over the Gloucester Wolverines as the Hornets defeated
the Wolverines 58-33. The next game that day brought on
the team’s toughest competition in the tournament, the
Hull Dragons, but the team was warmed up and confident.
The Hornets never gave up the lead and eventually
secured a 73-62 victory.
The Hornets last game of round robin play on Sunday had
the boys up early, but everyone must have had good
nights sleep because the Hornets defeated Osgoode
Bedrock 59-34. With a 4-0 record the Hornets went
undefeated in their pool, advancing them to the
semi-final game against the Hull Dragons.
After defeating Hull earlier in the tournament, the
Hornets were determined to win again. The championship
game proved exciting to watch. Both teams played very
well and there was good hustle and determination on both
sides, but the Hornets kept their commanding lead,
giving them a 65-51 game victory and the Gold Medal.
The team has been working hard and as the team moves
into the important part of the season the coaches are
confident that all of the effort placed into team
defence these last few months will pay off for the
Hornets. The team is looking forward to their busy
schedule, which will see them playing in high level
tournaments including the Gloucester Tournament, Blessed
Sacrament Tournament and the Ottawa Guardsmen
Tournament.
