The Goulbourn Stingers Major Midget basketball team
brought home Division I silver medals from the 2007
Eastern Ontario Basketball Championships played in
Brockville on April 13th-14th.
The
Stinger’s first game in round robin play was Saturday
morning versus the Barrhaven Blue Devils. The Stingers
played a strong first game, were up 21 – 9 at half and
went on to win 37-23. The second game in round robin
play was against the Ottawa Celtics. The Stingers led by
three points at the half, and never let down to post a
43-32 victory. In the final game of the day, the
Stingers took on the Ottawa Guardsmen. The Stingers
out-paced the Guardsmen 49-24 for the win.
In
Sunday morning semi-final play the Stingers faced the
Cornwall Lions. The Stingers came out hard and were up
10 points at the half. The Stingers continued their
strong play at both ends of the floor and won the
contest 44-31, earning a berth in the tournament final.

The championship game was against the number one ranked
Gloucester Wolverines. The Stingers worked hard, but
struggled early with shooting from the floor and
rebounding and found themselves down 11 points at the
half. The Stingers mounted a comeback in the second half
and managed to close to within three points in the
fourth quarter before being defeated 42-35. The Stingers
were awarded silver medals for their efforts over the
weekend.

The Goulbourn Stingers
Major Midget #1 basketball team earned silver medals at
the recent Mike O’Connor basketball tournament hosted by
the Gloucester Cumberland Basketball Association on the
weekend of February 16-18, 2007.
Friday
evening round robin play saw the Stingers defeat the
Elgin Wildcats 69-30. The Stingers faced the Sudbury
Lakers in their second game of round robin action on the
Saturday morning and came away with a 48-20 victory. The
Stingers third game in round robin play was on the
Saturday afternoon versus the sharp shooting Ottawa
Celtics. The Stingers trailed during the first quarter,
but managed to close to within three points by the
half-time. They never overcame the deficit as the
Celtics had the hot hand from outside the arc for the
duration of the contest. The Stingers were defeated
44-39. The Stingers then rallied to win their forth game
in pool action, defeating the Kingston Fighting Irish
42-17.

The Stingers’ 3-1 record in the round robin portion of
the tournament earned them a semi-final berth on the
Sunday morning. They took on the Ottawa Celtics once
more. As expected, the game was a battle from start to
finish. The Stingers came out of the gate hard to lead
22-11 at half. The Celtics continued to hit the long
shots in the second half, but the Stingers were solid
from the foul line in the closing minutes to post a
47-41 victory. The win sent the Stingers on to the gold
medal game on the Sunday afternoon against the
Gloucester Wolverines. The Stingers trailed by only
three at the half before the game got away from them and
they were defeated 43-32.
The Stingers thank Coach Pat Stoqua, Assistant Coaches
Paul Streatch and Wendy Verrecchia and Manager Elizabeth
Stoqua for their support during the season.

Stingers Take Tournament Gold!
The Goulbourn Stingers #1 Major Midget Girls basketball
team participated in the Ottawa Shooting Stars Winter
Classic basketball tournament on the weekend of January
12-14. The team went 5-0 for the weekend en route to the
tournament championship.

Saturday morning, the Stinger’s first game in round
robin play was against the Arnprior Pride. The Stingers
built an early lead and went on to win the contest
43-22. Victoria Cowell was named the Stinger’s player of
the game. Next the Stingers took on the Gloucester
Wolverines. Play during the first half was very tight
with neither team being able to break away. The score
was 26-26 at the halftime buzzer. The Stingers came out
hard in the second half and never looked back. By the
time the final horn sounded, the Stingers had secured
the victory 48-34. Morgan Roesler was honoured as the
player of the game for the Stingers. The Stinger’s final
game in round robin action was versus an athletic,
aggressive Ottawa Celtics team. Tenacious defense and a
relentless half court trapping press resulted in
numerous Celtic turnovers and contributed to a final
victory of 49-44. Jenna Elliot was chosen as the player
of the game. Sweeping their pool in round robin play
advanced the Stingers into semi-final action on Sunday.
On Sunday morning, the Stingers downed the Barrhaven
Blue Devils 45-22 in semi-final play and earned a spot
in gold medal game. Krysten Patrick was selected as the
player of the game. The Stingers met the Ottawa Celtics
for the tournament championship at Brookfield High on
Sunday afternoon. The Stingers handled the aggressive
Celtic defense with increased poise to lead 26-14 at
half. The Stingers continued to work hard at both ends
of the floor and emerged victorious 36-27 to win the
tournament championship. Lia Blake was named the player
of the game.
The Stingers would like to thank head coach Pat Stoqua
with assistance from Wendy Verrecchia and Paul Streatch
for their leadership throughout as well as Stinger’s
manager, Elizabeth Stoqua, for her continued dedication
to the team.
