Goulbourn Stingers Win
Silver Medal
in the Ottawa Shooting Stars Tournament AA/AAA Division
The Goulbourn Stingers Major Midget
#1 basketball team earned silver medals at the Ottawa
Shooting Stars Winter Classic held January 18th-20th in
Ottawa at Ashbury College.
The
Stinger’s first game in round robin action was the
Friday evening against the Arnprior Pride. The Stinger’s
balanced attack from the floor led them to a convincing
victory. On the Saturday morning, the Stingers met the
Belleville Spirits # 2 squad. The Stingers played a
solid game and took the contest 57-29. The final game of
round robin play was Saturday afternoon versus the
Toronto Lords. The Stingers came out flat to trail 18-10
at the half and couldn’t recover from the slow start.
The Lords secured the victory 40-34.
The Stingers
2-1 record in pool play was enough to advance them to
the quarter final round and a meeting with the Barrhaven
Blue Devils. The Stingers were out to avenge an earlier
loss against the Blue Devils and pressed to a 25-17 lead
at the half. The Stingers continued to work hard and
hung on to win the game 39-35.

The Stingers
went on to face the Cornwall Lions on the Sunday morning
in semi-final play. The team initially got off to a
strong start in this game. However, a gym clearing break
to investigate the building’s activated fire alarm
system contributed to a momentum swing that saw the
Stingers trail 28-23 at the break. The Stingers renewed
their focus in the second half and worked both ends of
the floor to take the game 53-50 and earn a spot in the
gold medal game.
Sunday
afternoon the Stingers faced the London Ramblers in the
championship game. The Stingers had their work cut out
for them as the Ramblers had defeated all challengers by
a minimum of 20 points during tournament play. The
Stingers hustled to a 24-14 lead at half, which they
sustained through three quarters. In the forth quarter
the Ramblers showed a 1-2-1-1 full court press which
gave the Stingers considerable trouble. The Ramblers
capitalized on numerous Stinger turnovers to trail by
one point with less than a minute left on the clock. The
Ramblers scored a basket with seconds remaining in the
game to emerge victorious 40-39. The Stingers were
awarded silver medals for their second place finish in
the tournament.
The Stingers
are coached by Scott Nystedt, Kevin Kennedy, Paul
Streatch and Kristen Petruska and are managed by
Lorena-Del Nystedt.

Goulbourn Stingers Major
Midget #1
The
Goulbourn Stingers Major Midget #1 basketball team won
the championship banner at the Horaire Omnium des
Griffons at CGEP Outaouais in Gatineau on November 10
and 11th. The Stinger coaches are especially proud of
this accomplishment as the Stingers were playing up an
age level with the Juvenile teams.
The Stingers
opened the tournament with an easy victory over a less
experienced Saint Joseph team on the Saturday morning.
This win pushed the Stingers to the championship side of
the tournament bracket and led to a semi-final meeting
with the Mont Bleu Panthers on the Saturday evening. The
Stingers played a solid game against an aggressive,
quick Mont Bleu squad and took a 29-15 lead at the half.
The Stingers continued to push the ball in transition in

This win set up a championship
match with the Kanata Cavaliers Juvenile team on the
Sunday morning. The Stingers, outsized by their older
opponents, exhibited great tenacity on defence and were
able to grab their share of boards and keep the taller
Kanata players off the offensive glass. The Singers used
their quickness to push the Kanata players into a
running game and led the championship contest 30-23 at
the half. The determined Stinger squad continued their
strong team play during second half and won the
championship game 51-42.
Stinger Molly Kennedy was awarded the tournament MVP
for her outstanding play during the weekend.
Congratulations, Molly! The Stingers would like to thank
Head Coach Scott Nystedt, along with Assistant Coaches
Kevin Kennedy, Paul Streatch and Kristen Petruska. .
