January 20th the Novice Girls Goulbourn Stingers
travelled to Osgoode to play in their first tournament
of the season. The team only has four returning players
from last season, but the first year Novice girls have
worked hard and improved greatly since October 2006.

In their first match the Stingers met the tournament
hosts Osgoode Bedrock. The first half was a struggle for
both teams as they started off slowly. The Stingers held
a slim 4 point lead going into the second half. Some
encouragement at halftime from the coaches inspired the
girls to pick up the pace in the second half. The
Stingers came out strong in the second half playing
tough defence and great team play. They quickly built on
their lead and ended the game with a 29 - 16 victory.
The next game matched the rival Barrhaven Blue Devils
against the Stingers. The Stingers have played the Blue
Devils several times this year, with all matches being
very close. Just like the first game the Stingers
started out slow and clinged to a 2 point lead at the
half. Some more encouragement from the coaches at half
time worked it's magic as the Stingers outscored the
Bluedevils 12 - 3 in the 3rd quarter. In the 4th the
Stingers kept up their stong play and finished the game
with a 25 - 15 victory over a tough Blue Devils Team.
The final game of the day for the Stingers was against
the Russell Rockets. Russell is a strong team and the
Stingers had their work cut out for them. Unlike the
first two games the Stingers came out strong. They had a
13 point lead at the half and it looked like they were
going to cruise to an easy victory. In the 3rd quarter
the Rockets came out strong outscoring the Stingers by 7
points and closing the gap. The Rockets kept coming in
the 4th quarter, but the Stingers did not let down and
played tough defence. Their efforts were rewarded with a
30 - 25 victory.
The girls went 3 wins and 0 losses for the day and won
the tournament. All of their parents and siblings are
very proud of them!
The Stingers are coached by Janine Bender and Scott
Nystedt. They are managed by Sharon Streatch.
