The girls swept all 4
of the games they played to emerge victorious with a gold
medal. The first game they played was against the
Peterborough Power. By the end of the half, the girls had
accumulated a sizable lead. However, in the third quarter
the team was held to only four points which allowed
Peterborough to close the gap.. Fortunately in the fourth,
the girls regrouped, played their game and won by a score of
41 to 31. Next the “Stingers” found themselves in a very
exciting, fast paced, defensive game against the North
Toronto Huskies. Hard work by the Stingers allowed them to
emerge victorious by a score of 36 to 25.
As a result of their success in round robin play, Goulbourn
moved on to the semi-final game on Sunday against the
Oakville Vytis. After adjusting to the confines of the small
court and the tough physical play, the Stingers were
victorious once again by a score of 60 to 34.
Sunday afternoon in the gold medal final, Goulbourn faced
the Brockville Blazers. The girls got off to a strong start
but a few lapses in concentration in the second quarter
allowed Brockville to narrow the gap. A strong defensive
performance and an improved scoring touch allowed the
Stingers to close the door on Brockville to win the gold
medal by a score of 43 to 35. Team co-captain Amanda Oatway
was presented with the MVP award for her leadership and
strong play throughout the tournament. The team would like
to extend their thanks to their coaches Pat Stoqua, and Jim
Narraway and team manager Elizabeth Stoqua for their
dedication and leadership.
